Media Critique

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/15/entertainment/star-trek-arrest-jennifer-lien-feat/?iid=ob_article_topstories_pool&iref=obnetwork

The article was written today and is about how Star Trek star, Jennifer Lien, was arrested on October 3rd for public indecentcy. It was very repetitive and not informative in any way. the reporter told us that she caused disturbance by yelling obscure comments at her neighbor and stripping.
The pictures told the story more than the reporter, Henry Hanks, did. The article did not possess forum because it did not supply a steady stream of hgh quality journalism and did not make the important intersting. The topic of the article is not important information in and of itself because it won't affect the community as a whole for a long period of time. It was not relevant to other any other current events either.

John Peter Zenger: Jediah Holman

Jediah's blog: I appreciate your honetsy, too. I love how you "battle with sleep". That's a hopeless fight for us all.
I agree that the John Peter Zenger case was interesting and that it is important to journalism in the future and today. Journalism would be so different. The stories would not be very informative or truthful. No one would know what was really going on in the world.

Mass Communication: Melissa Perello

Pocket Full of Secrets First off I would like to acknowledge how honest you were about the difficulty of this concept for you. It entertained me. Anyway, I thought this lecture was cofusing too ,but not because of the concept. The steps ( that the little diagram refrenced) still confuses me a bit.
I like how you experimented with mass comunication, filters and impediments. We never really notice how or when we do things. This just proves that we will use the lessons we learn in school someday. I also like your similie.
I do agree that mass communication can be use dfor the wrong things, such as sucking your lips into a shotglass, sometimes. Also, that mass communication is crucial to society today.

Response to History of Mass Media

In my previous years of education, mass media was mentioned but never explained, so this lecture came as real clarity. I learned that in group communication there are non verbal responses, such as nods, and not everyone talks. I also learned the five steps to communication (stimulus, encoding, transmission, decoding, internalization, and feedback loop) and that they can be interrupted by filters and impedements. Filters occur during decoding and prevent decoding. Impedements occur between decoding and internalization .
I found psychiological filters interesting because I just can't imagine  someone being so closed-minded that they won't even acknowledge a form of communication. That astonishes me.

Response to Binary Models Lecture

What I did not understand about this lecture was why horizontal monopolies are illegal. I understand that one person would have the power over everything and tthat's not the "American way", but why is that so bad? Also, how would one get to the point of being the filter for a horizontal monopoly?
All the fourteen years I've been alive, i had never heard of or known about elitist and populist. I've never really experienced it (except that one time all the stations I listend todecided to start playing crappy music). I thought every medium was trying to stay with the forever changing trends, but apparently there are mediums that express their own views no matter what and have purpose.
This lecture taught me a lot about how the entertainment world is becoming smaller and how business is handeled within it. I would not have known otherwise.

Response to Books/ Printing Press Lecture

I thought the way the church manipulated the highly illeterate population into giving them all their money was interesting. That is what God wanted afterall. Also, the huge effect books had on the world in general suprises me. It just truly shows how powerful literature is.  Books are a valuable asset to today's world. Without them humanity would be clueless.
I think we definitely benefited from the printing press , even with the limited but existent negatives. We would know a lot less about our surrounding world and be super underdeveloped.I agree    that it's the most important innovation of mankind.

Response to Newspaper Lecture

I found the fact that there were newspapers back in the days of the Roman Empire intersting. I didn't know they had time for simple pleasures such as reading while conquering the world and all. I also liked how muckkrackers embraced that name, even though they're evading people's privacy. whatever makes them happy, I guess.
I did not completely understand how broad sheets worked. I get that they were huge pices of paper that were posted for public consumption, what I don't understand is how most of the people read them if there were high illeteracy rates during that time.
To me ,this lecture was very helpful and resourceful because it brings awareness to what kind of journalism to stay away from and what my rights are as a reporter. Now, I know not to report on things such as which direction Kimye will name thier newest child because everyone know that it's not important at all. Also, due to the " Truth is the ultimate defense against libel" precedent I know to thoroghly fact check every piece I write.
